What should I write my college scholarship essay about?

The college I am applying to has a special scholarship competition for which I need to write a separate essay. The topic was “Describe one problem our generation faces and what can be done about it.” Now I have two ideas of what I could write about. One is teenage pregnancy and the other is the repercussions of accruing debt (especially student loans) upon the middle class. Which one should I pick?

I think the second option demonstrates more critical thinking as you can definitely infuse some of the current economic crisis and will allow you to draw on historical facts and figures. You would be able to draw further relations to the culture of education in America, the disparities between socioeconomic groups, etc. Teen pregnancy is a pressing social issue, but leave that research to the middle school students and freshmen. Best of luck to you.

That depends on you. Both require research, that you demonstrate your ability to find and recognize the importance of the most salient facts. And of course the ability to present them cogently and make convincing arguments. But the latter is more mechanistic or technical, the former a bit more creative. Which is to say that the latter can be addressed from the point of view of economics — find out how much people end up owing, how that has changed over the years as a percentage of real (inflation adjusted) income, etc. Whereas the former requires, in addition to figures about pregnancy rates and such, a bit of insight into society and human behavior. So choose the one that most appeals to you, because the subject that does will be a better fit to your intellectual strengths.
